How do we know that God can forgive sin?

Answered in 1 source

We know God can forgive sin because His justice is satisfied through Christ's sacrifice.

The certainty of God's forgiveness is grounded in His fidelity to His nature and His covenant, as well as the complete and effective sacrifice made by Jesus Christ. The Scriptures affirm that God's justice requires that sin be punished, and this punishment was fully enacted upon Christ, as He bore our sins and endured God's wrath. In this way, God can rightfully forgive those who trust in Christ, because He does not compromise His justice; rather, He upholds it through the perfect obedience and sacrificial death of His Son. Therefore, the assurance of forgiveness is not a matter of wishful thinking, but a reality anchored in God's unchanging character and the historic event of the cross.
