How do we know that God demands brokenness?

Answered in 1 source

God's demand for brokenness is evident in Scripture, especially as it relates to our need for repentance and reliance on His grace.

The demand for a broken heart stems from God's holiness and our sinfulness. The parable in Luke 20:9-19 illustrates the rejection of God's messengers and ultimately His Son, revealing the desperate wickedness of man. Jesus teaches that those who fall upon Him—the rock—will be broken, indicating that recognition of one's unworthiness leads to spiritual awakening. When we confront our sin in light of God's holiness, we see that a broken heart is required for true repentance. As stated in Isaiah 57:15, God dwells with those who are broken and contrite in spirit, affirming that brokenness is integral to our relationship with Him.
