How do we know that God does not punish His children?

It is important to understand that while God does correct His children, He does not punish them for their sins. This is because the punishment for sin was fully satisfied in Jesus Christ, our substitute. Hebrews 12:6 explains that 'the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.' This indicates that correction comes from a place of love, not retaliation. Therefore, while trials may come into our lives, they are for our training and spiritual growth rather than a punishment for wrongdoing.
