How do we know that God has a purpose for our afflictions?

Answered in 1 source

God's sovereignty assures us that all afflictions serve His purposes, as noted in the story of the man born blind.

The sovereignty of God over all things, including human suffering, provides a strong foundation for understanding the purpose behind our afflictions. The account of the man born blind in John 9 exemplifies that afflictions can happen not due to personal or ancestral sin, but for reasons that bring glory to God. The belief in a particular Providence means that Christians can trust that their suffering has distinct purposes. This trust is bolstered by passages that assure us God works all things together for good (Romans 8:28) and that our trials are ultimately for His glory and our benefit.
