How do we know that God has a purpose for suffering in our lives?

Answered in 1 source

Scripture demonstrates that God uses suffering to fulfill His sovereign purposes, as seen in Joseph's life and ultimately in Christ's passion.

The life of Joseph exemplifies how suffering can serve a greater purpose in God's plan. Throughout Joseph's trials—being sold into slavery, falsely accused, and imprisoned—he remained faithful and recognized that God was at work behind the scenes. Joseph later reassured his brothers, explaining, 'You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good' (Genesis 50:20). This reveals a critical theological principle: God ordains suffering as part of His sovereign will for various reasons, including character shaping, preparation for future responsibilities, and the fulfillment of His overarching plan. In the New Testament, Christ's suffering and crucifixion also serve to redeem humanity, showing us that God's purposes often transcend immediate circumstances.
