How do we know that God is both merciful and just?

Answered in 1 source

God demonstrates His merciful justice through Christ, who reconciles both attributes at the cross.

The character of God is perfectly revealed in the cross of Jesus Christ, where His mercy meets His justice. While Psalm 85:10 depicts mercy and truth meeting, righteousness and peace kissing, it is through the atoning sacrifice of Christ that these two seemingly opposing attributes find harmony. God does not overlook sin; rather, He punishes sin by placing it upon Christ. Thus, Romans 3:26 emphasizes that God is just and the justifier of those who have faith in Jesus. This duality of justice and mercy assures believers that while God upholds His righteous law, He also extends grace, providing a way for us to be saved.
