How do we know that God is in control of our plans and disappointments?

Answered in 1 source

God's sovereignty over all circumstances assures us that He works all things for the good of those who love Him.

The Apostle Paul faced many disappointments and unforeseen events in his ministry, yet he ultimately trusted in God's providence. Romans 8:28 reassures believers that 'all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.' This is an invitation to recognize that our plans may not unfold as expected, but God is still sovereign and actively guiding our lives. As we wrestle with disappointments, we can find hope in knowing that God's purposes will prevail, often in ways we cannot foresee, and that He remains in control even in our challenges.
