How do we know that God is love?

Answered in 2 sources

The Bible declares God to be love itself; this attribute is central to His nature and is expressed through His actions toward humanity.

According to 1 John 1:5, ‘God is light’, and alongside that, we derive from scripture the greater truth that ‘God is love’ (1 John 4:8). This declaration is not merely that God loves, but that love is intrinsic to His very being. God’s love is independent, eternal, and fully sovereign, which means He cannot act contrary to His loving nature. Critical to understanding this concept is recognizing that God's love is demonstrated through the sacrificial work of Christ, who bore our sins and became our righteousness. Thus, knowing God is love is foundational to grasping the gospel of grace.
