How do we know that God is our shepherd?

In Ezekiel 34:23, God speaks of appointing a shepherd over His people. This shepherd is none other than Christ, the son of David, who finds and tends to His sheep. The assurance that He is our shepherd comes from the realization that we have been lost and He actively seeks us until we are found.
