How do we know that God requires perfect righteousness?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that God demands perfection, as seen in the law and exemplified by Jesus Christ.

God's holiness necessitates His demand for perfection. In Matthew 5:48, Jesus commands, 'You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect,' which sets the standard for righteousness. The law, defined as holy, just, and good (Romans 7:12), reveals the glory of Christ and indicates that our attempts to uphold it are futile. The Apostle Paul acknowledges in Romans 7:18 that in his flesh dwells no good thing, highlighting that even our best efforts fall short of God’s standard. Therefore, our only hope of righteousness is found in Christ, who fulfilled the law flawlessly and stands as the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes (Romans 10:4).
