How do we know that God's grace is necessary for repentance?

Answered in 1 source

Scripture shows that repentance is a result of God's grace and not merely an act of will.

We understand that God's grace is necessary for repentance through biblical examples, such as Pharaoh's vain repentance, which highlights that fear of judgment alone does not produce true repentance. In Exodus 8:15, Pharaoh displayed regret after experiencing God's judgment but quickly hardened his heart when the troubles subsided. This illustrates that man’s natural inclination is towards sin unless God grants a genuine change of heart. Paul emphasizes in Romans 2:4 that it is the goodness of God that leads one to true repentance, further affirming that without God's intervening grace, a person cannot truly repent.
