How do we know that God's grace is necessary for spiritual growth?

Answered in 1 source

God's grace is essential for spiritual growth as it is the divine operation that transforms a sinner's heart and enables faith.

In the Reformed understanding, spiritual growth is entirely dependent on God's grace. Romans 9:16 states that it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy. Just as a seed left unplanted cannot grow, a heart not touched by grace cannot respond to God. The entire operation of salvation, including faith and repentance, is described as a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8-9). This underscores that any genuine growth in the Christian life results from God's initiative and power working within a believer. God's grace prepares the heart to receive the gospel, just as the soil must be prepared for the seed to flourish.
