How do we know that God's love is for the elect?

Answered in 1 source

God's love as described in Scripture is particular, aiming to save His chosen people rather than every individual.

In John 3:16, the phrase 'God so loved the world' has often been interpreted to imply that God's love is indiscriminate; however, context reveals that God’s love is directed toward His elect. This is further elucidated in 1 John 2:15-17, which teaches us not to love the world in a way that opposes God's purpose. Moreover, John 17:9 emphasizes that Jesus prayed specifically for those given to Him by the Father, asserting that His redemptive work is intended for a distinct group—the elect. The assurance that God's love will lead to salvation is highlighted in Romans 8:28-30, indicating that those whom He foreknew, He predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son.
