How do we know that God's love is not based on our works?

Answered in 1 source

God's love and acceptance are based solely on His grace, not our own works or merits.

In Romans 9, we see that God loved Jacob and hated Esau before either had performed any good or evil. This establishes that God's election is not dependent on human actions; rather, it is a matter of God’s sovereign grace. The older brother in the prodigal son parable illustrates a common misunderstanding — he believed his obedience warranted greater favor. However, the father's response to the returning son underscores that acceptance hinges on mercy, not merit. By affirming God's unconditional love, we understand that it is grace that saves, not our deeds.
