How do we know that God's mercy is essential for salvation?

Answered in 7 sources

God's mercy is essential for salvation, as it offers forgiveness and redemption, which we see clearly in Romans 9:15-16.

The necessity of God's mercy in salvation stems from the biblical doctrine that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). As sinners, we are not capable of achieving righteousness on our own; hence, God's mercy intervenes. Romans 9:15-16 declares that God shows mercy to whom He wills and that it is not dependent on human will or exertion, but on God who has mercy. This underscores that salvation is a gracious gift from God, not something we can earn. Through God's mercy, the proud and rebellious hearts are humbled, allowing us to recognize our need for a Savior, as seen in the experience of Saul of Tarsus. Without His mercy, we would remain in our sinful state, without hope or redemption.
