How do we know that God's mercy is real?

Answered in 11 sources

We know God's mercy is real through His actions towards sinners as exemplified in Scripture, particularly in the salvation of the Ninevites.

God's mercy is vividly portrayed in the account of the Ninevites' repentance following Jonah's preaching (Jonah 3). The multitude turned from their evil ways, demonstrating their awareness of their sin and God's anger towards it. This recognition of one's sinful state, coupled with seeking God's mercy, leads to salvation. Moreover, the Apostle Paul reiterates this theme in Titus 3:4-5, where he states, 'But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy.' The experiential reality of God's mercy is confirmed in the transformed lives of those who repent and trust in Him.
