How do we know that God's mercy outweighs His vengeance?

God's greatest glory is His sovereign mercy towards sinners, which is essential to understand in the light of His vengeance. While God must punish sin to uphold His holiness, He has provided a way for His justice to be satisfied through the atoning sacrifice of Christ. This means that while God does take vengeance on sin, He also extends mercy through Christ's suffering.
