How do we know that God uses suffering for a purpose?

Answered in 1 source

God uses suffering as a refining process for believers, teaching them through trials and tribulations.

God’s use of suffering as a purposeful tool in the life of the believer is rooted in His sovereign plan and eternal love. The trials believers endure are not random acts of cruelty but rather serve a redeeming purpose. As evidenced by Scriptures like Romans 5:3-5, suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. These passages illustrate that trials enrich the spiritual life and manifest God’s grace through the believer’s endurance during hardship. They are likened to a refining fire that burns away impurities while strengthening the character of those who trust in God.

Moreover, suffering can deepen a believer's relationship with God, creating a greater dependency on His grace and power. It allows believers to participate in Christ's sufferings, enhancing their understanding of His sacrifice. Consequently, trials can become occasions for worship and growth, where believers learn to rely on God's promises and provision during difficult times. In this way, God transforms hardships into opportunities for glorifying Him and furthering His redemptive work.
