How do we know that God values mercy?

Answered in 1 source

God's mercy is foundational to His character as demonstrated throughout Scripture, particularly in His dealings with sinners.

The value of mercy is deeply embedded in the nature of God. In Genesis 19, we see God's mercy in action as He saves Lot from the destruction of Sodom, despite Lot's lingering hesitance. This early depiction of mercy shows that it is not merely God withholding punishment but actively working to save and protect those who do not deserve it. Moreover, God's sovereign mercy is evidenced by His promise to be merciful to whom He wills (Romans 9:15). This reinforces the idea that mercy is an expression of God's grace, which is foundational to our salvation. As believers, loving mercy should reflect our understanding of God's character and His grace extended toward us.
