How do we know that God works in our lives despite sin?

Answered in 1 source

God works in our lives to manifest His glory, even amid sin and suffering.

The case of the man born blind emphasizes that God’s work can be revealed through our suffering. Jesus mentioned that the man was born blind so that 'the works of God should be made manifest in him' (John 9:3). This tells us that God is sovereign over our circumstances, using them for His greater purposes. Similarly, Romans 8:28 assures believers that all things, including suffering and trials, work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose. Thus, God can transform our adversities into settings for His glory.
