How do we know that grace is free?

Answered in 2 sources

We know grace is free through Scripture that teaches salvation is not based on human effort, but solely on God's mercy.

The concept of grace being free is foundational to the Christian faith. Ephesians 2:8-9 clearly states that salvation is by grace through faith, and this is not from ourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. This reinforces the idea that grace does not depend on human initiative or will but is a reflection of God's love and mercy. Therefore, the freeness of grace emphasizes that it is God's initiative in saving sinners, which brings Him glory, rather than any merit found in humanity.
