How do we know that idolatry is a serious sin in the Bible?

Answered in 1 source

Idolatry is condemned repeatedly in Scripture as a departure from worshiping the one true God.

The seriousness of idolatry is emphasized throughout the Bible, particularly in the first two commandments that prohibit the making of graven images or any likeness of God. In Exodus 20:4-5, the Lord declares Himself a jealous God and warns of visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children of those who hate Him. Idolatry at its core is a rejection of God's unique nature and character, as it attempts to reduce Him to a form that human beings can control or comprehend. In the case of Jeroboam, his creation of golden calves represented a direct violation of God’s explicit commands and a profound misunderstanding of God's holiness. Thus, idolatry remains a serious sin because it distorts the truth of God's nature and the proper way to approach Him in worship.
