How do we know that indulgences are not a true path to salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Indulgences cannot absolve sins or confer grace; only true contrition and repentance lead to God's forgiveness.

The notion of indulgences has led to significant theological concerns regarding their role in the forgiveness of sins. The papal authority to grant indulgences cannot equate to the true grace of God. According to Martin Luther's reflections on this matter, those who believe they can attain salvation through the purchase of indulgences misunderstand the nature of God's grace. Ephesians 2:8-9 clearly states that it is by grace we have been saved through faith, not through works or purchases. Consequently, the reliance on indulgences deceives many into thinking they have found relief from divine penalties without the necessary element of true repentance and contrition.
