How do we know that Jesus' death on the cross was necessary?

Answered in 1 source

Jesus' death was necessary to fulfill God's justice and to redeem His people from sin.

The necessity of Jesus' death is rooted in the doctrine of substitutionary atonement. Romans 3 teaches that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Therefore, in order to satisfy God's justice, a perfect sacrifice was required. Jesus, being the sinless Son of God, took upon Himself the sins of His people, thus fulfilling God's righteous demands. As stated in Isaiah 53:10, it pleased the Lord to bruise Him, indicating that His death was not an accident but rather a predetermined act of divine providence to ensure the redemption of His elect. The cross, therefore, was not just a necessity in the plan of redemption, but the very means by which God chose to save sinners.
