How do we know that Joseph is a type of Christ?

Answered in 3 sources

Joseph exemplifies characteristics that are echoed in Christ's life, including suffering, servitude, and ultimate triumph.

Joseph serves as a type of Christ primarily because of the parallels seen in their experiences and the roles they played in God's redemptive history. Both underwent significant suffering and injustice; Joseph was sold into slavery and imprisoned, while Christ endured the agony of the cross and rejection. Both ultimately provided salvation: Joseph saved his family and people from famine, paralleling how Christ saves His people from their sins. In Genesis 41:39-40, Pharaoh acknowledges Joseph’s wisdom, a reflection of Christ as the wisdom from God (1 Corinthians 1:30). The theme of rejection followed by exaltation further solidifies Joseph's typology when we see how God lifted him to a position of authority despite his trials, resembling Christ's ascension to glory.
