How do we know that mercy is essential for acceptance with God?

Answered in 1 source

Mercy is essential for acceptance because God requires us to come to Him with humility and the recognition of our need for grace.

In Micah 6:8, the Lord reveals what He requires of us: to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God. This indicates that mercy must be at the heart of our approach to God. Abel's sacrifice was accepted because he approached God in faith and acknowledged his need for mercy, while Cain relied on his own works. Without recognizing our utter dependence on God’s mercy, we cannot be accepted. We must understand that all our righteousness is as filthy rags, and the way to God is through the acknowledgment of His grace and mercy bestowed through Jesus Christ.
