How do we know that mercy is only found in this life?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible states that once we die, there is no opportunity for mercy, as highlighted in Luke 16:26.

The understanding that mercy is exclusive to this life is crucial in Christian theology. In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, the rich man experiences torment after death and seeks mercy, only to be told by Abraham that there is a fixed chasm that prevents any passing between heaven and hell (Luke 16:26). This reinforces the concept that our decisions regarding faith and repentance must occur while we are alive; after death, the opportunity to seek mercy from God is lost. This underscores the urgency for individuals to address their spiritual state now rather than procrastinate, as we do not know the time of our death, making the present moment the time to seek the Lord's grace.
