How do we know that prophecy is more important than speaking in tongues?

Answered in 1 source

Paul asserts that prophecy is more significant because it edifies the church, while tongues, unless interpreted, do not convey gospel truth.

In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul makes a clear distinction between the spiritual gift of prophecy and that of speaking in tongues. He states that the one who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, exhortation, and comfort (1 Corinthians 14:3). In contrast, the individual who speaks in tongues speaks to God and is not understood by men (1 Corinthians 14:2). This lack of understanding renders tongues less profitable in a communal worship setting. Paul desires that believers focus on gifts that promote clarity and build up the body of Christ, demonstrating the priority of prophecy.
