How do we know that reformation is not enough for salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Reformation is insufficient because it addresses external behavior rather than the corrupt nature of the heart, which is opposed to God.

The sermon clearly delineates the failure of reformation efforts, which attempt to modify behavior through rules and laws. However, as articulated in Mark 7, human guilt arises from our inner nature rather than our actions alone. By relying on human effort and external compliance to the law, people miss the essential truth that internal transformation is required. Genuine conversion entails receiving a new heart from God, which allows believers to pursue righteousness. The law’s role is to reveal our inability to achieve holiness and our need for the transforming power of God's grace, ensuring that true salvation goes beyond mere outward conformity.
