How do we know that regeneration comes before conversion?

Answered in 1 source

Regeneration is a work of God that must occur before a person can turn to Christ in faith.

Regeneration, a sovereign act of God, occurs before conversion. This foundational truth in Reformed theology highlights that while conversion—the turning of the heart to Christ—may happen gradually, regeneration is God's transforming work within the believer. The conversion process requires the Holy Spirit to make a sinner willing to come to Christ. This was the case with the Samaritan woman, who initially struggled to grasp the living water that Jesus offered her. Her eventual recognition of her sin was part of the Holy Spirit's work within her heart, leading her towards faith.
