How do we know that regeneration is different from reformation?

Answered in 1 source

Regeneration is a work of God that brings new life, while reformation involves an external change that does not change the heart.

Regeneration refers to the transformative work of the Holy Spirit, making a person alive in Christ. It is a divine act where one's heart is changed, enabling them to genuinely seek and love God. In contrast, reformation may involve external changes, such as stopping sinful behaviors or adopting moralistic practices, but it does not equate to true heart change. Israel's repeated cycle of sin and temporary reformation demonstrates that mere behavior modification is insufficient for genuine spiritual life. The profound difference lies in the new birth that only God can provide, as emphasized in Ephesians 2:11-13.
