How do we know that regeneration is necessary for salvation?

Answered in 14 sources

Regeneration is necessary because it is the divine act of making spiritually dead individuals alive, enabling them to respond to God and receive salvation (Ephesians 2:5).

The necessity of regeneration stems from our condition as described in Ephesians 2:1-5, where Paul emphasizes that we were once dead in sin. This notion aligns with the doctrine of total depravity, which holds that apart from the work of the Holy Spirit, humans are unable to seek God or fulfill any spiritual good. Regeneration, or being 'quickened,' signifies a complete transformation initiated by God through the Holy Spirit, enabling an individual to respond in faith to the gospel. Without this divine quickening, one cannot truly understand or accept the truth of salvation offered in Christ.
