How do we know that repentance and faith are necessary for salvation?

Answered in 2 sources

Repentance and faith are essential for salvation as taught directly by Scripture, demonstrating a complete turnaround toward God.

The Bible explicitly teaches that both repentance and faith are integral to salvation. In Acts 20:21, Paul summarizes his ministry by stating that he preached 'repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.' These two elements are inseparable, akin to two sides of the same coin; one cannot exist without the other. Genuine faith results in repentance, which is turning away from sin and toward God, exemplified in Psalms where David acknowledges his sins and seeks God’s mercy (Psalm 51). Furthermore, both are gifts from God, emphasizing His sovereignty in our salvation, as highlighted in Ephesians 2:8-9. This ensures that salvation is unmerited and solely attributed to His grace.
