How do we know that repentance is true?

Answered in 1 source

True repentance is evidenced by a changed heart and a hatred for sin.

True repentance is defined by its characteristics: it begins with a clear recognition of sin, leads to sorrow for that sin, and is followed by genuine confession before God. This heartfelt sorrow leads to a tangible change in behavior; one begins to break off from sin and develop a hatred for it. Such life-altering aspects of repentance reflect a transformed heart, forged through the grace of God, which is confirmed by a continuing faith in Christ. Those who are truly penitent will also strive to progress in their faith and repentance throughout their lives.
