How do we know that salvation is of the Lord and not by our works?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible asserts that salvation is solely by God's mercy, as indicated in Romans 9:16 which states, 'It is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy.'

Scripture clearly affirms that salvation cannot be earned through human effort or works. In Romans 9:16, it emphasizes that it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy. This aligns with the understanding that humanity cannot fulfill the requirements of the law to attain justification; rather, it highlights the grace and mercy of God in salvation. When we realize our state of guilt before God's law, we are led to cry out for His mercy, acknowledging that salvation is accomplished solely through Christ’s sacrificial work.
