How do we know that salvation is particular and not universal?

Answered in 1 source

Salvation is particular because the Bible states that Jesus came to save His people, indicating a specific group rather than all humanity (Matthew 1:21).

In Matthew 1:21, the angel proclaims that Jesus will save His people from their sins, emphasizing that salvation is not universal; it is specifically for those whom God has chosen. This notion is consistent with the historic Reformed doctrine that God’s grace is effective and applied to a particular set of individuals known as the elect. If God loves everybody and intends to save everyone, then logically, all would be saved, which contradicts the biblical reality that some will perish. Therefore, understanding salvation as particular affirms God's sovereignty and the effectiveness of Christ's atonement for His chosen people.
