How do we know that self-denial is important in the Christian life?

Answered in 2 sources

Self-denial is crucial for Christians as it reflects the recognition that our worth and merit before God come solely from Christ, not from our own efforts.

Self-denial, as emphasized by Paul in Philippians, begins with the rejection of any personal worth or righteousness derived from the law or good works. Paul illustrates this by recounting his own heritage and accomplishments, which he counted as loss for the sake of knowing Christ. True self-denial involves an ongoing commitment to find our identity, worth, and righteousness in Jesus Christ alone. It is about placing our hopes in Him rather than in our accomplishments or traditions, realizing that apart from Him, we are nothing.
