How do we know that self-righteousness is a sin?

Answered in 2 sources

Self-righteousness is considered a sin because it exalts one's own perceived goodness, directly opposing reliance on God's righteousness.

The Bible presents self-righteousness as perhaps the most offensive of sins in God's eyes. In Romans 9:32-33, Paul explains how the Jews sought righteousness through their works, failing to submit to God's righteousness found in Christ. Self-righteousness not only leads to a false sense of security but makes individuals judgmental and harsh towards others. It rejects the notion of genuine humility required to acknowledge sinfulness and the need for salvation through Jesus alone. By trusting ourselves instead of God, we undermine the very essence of the gospel.
