How do we know that sin originates from the heart?

Answered in 1 source

Jesus teaches that all defilement comes from within, and that evil thoughts are at the root of sin (Mark 7:21-23).

The Lord Jesus identifies the heart as the core of moral action, declaring that from within, out of the heart, come evil thoughts and various sins such as adultery, murder, and theft (Mark 7:21-22). This teaching aligns with the Reformed perspective that emphasizes total depravity—that is, the sinfulness of man. As seen in Psalm 94:11 and 1 Samuel 16:7, God examines the heart, distinguishing between outward appearances and inner reality. Thus, the Scriptures affirm that sin is not simply about external behaviors but originates, instead, in the sinful condition of the heart.
