How do we know that suffering has a purpose?

Answered in 3 sources

Suffering is not random; it serves a divine purpose, producing perseverance and character in the life of a believer (Romans 5:3-5).

The purpose of suffering is intricately tied to God's sovereign plan and our growth as Christians. Paul notes in Romans 5:3-5 that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance character, and character hope. This progression shows that our trials are used by God to refine us and draw us closer to Him. We go through suffering not because God is indifferent to our pain, but because He uses it to prepare us for the greater glory to come. As believers, our sufferings are ultimately for our good, shaping us into the image of Christ and increasing our faith.
