How do we know that the conviction of sin is necessary for salvation?

Answered in 1 source

The necessity of conviction of sin is shown in Scripture, indicating that only the guilty seek mercy and grace.

Scripture illustrates that real conviction of sin is foundational to understanding our need for a Savior. In Genesis 42, Joseph's brothers confront their past transgressions, acknowledging their guilt before him, which represents our need to come face-to-face with our sin against God. Without this acknowledgment, the gospel remains meaningless. The Apostle Paul echoes this in Romans when he discusses the universality of sin and the need for all to recognize their unrighteousness. It is only through the work of the Holy Spirit that one can come to this realization; thus, a genuine conviction of sin paves the way for repentance, where the sinner turns to Christ in faith for salvation. If one does not see their need for a Savior, they will not seek the grace that is freely offered in Christ.
