How do we know that the fear of God is true?

Answered in 1 source

The fear of God is affirmed through regeneration, given to believers by the Holy Spirit.

The fear of God is not something we can conjure up within ourselves; it is a gift from God through the process of regeneration. As stated in Jeremiah 32:40, God promises to give His people a new heart, filled with fear for Him that leads to lasting obedience. This fear keeps believers from departing from Him and is essential for persevering in faith. Moreover, it is through the law and the gospel that God instills this fear within us, revealing our sin and our need for Christ, thus prompting a holy reverence for Him.
