How do we know that the gift of the Holy Spirit is for us?

Answered in 1 source

The promise of the Holy Spirit is given to all whom the Lord calls, as stated in Acts 2:39.

In his sermon, Peter asserts, 'For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call' (Acts 2:39). This verse assures us that the gift of the Holy Spirit is not limited to the original audience but extends to all believers throughout history. This calling of God is an essential aspect of sovereign grace theology, teaching that salvation and the accompanying gifts of the Spirit are a result of God's sovereign will. Thus, every believer can confidently claim this promise, knowing it applies to them as part of the body of Christ.
