How do we know that the gift of tongues is not for today?

Answered in 1 source

The gift of tongues was specific to the early church and primarily served to authenticate the Gospel message; it is no longer necessary today.

In the early church, the gift of tongues allowed believers to preach the Gospel in languages they had not previously known, which was essential for the spread of the message in a multilingual society. Paul argues in 1 Corinthians 14 that these gifts were meant to edify the church and serve as signs for unbelievers. However, as the Church progressed and the Scriptures became complete, the need for such miraculous gifts diminished. Today, the clear communication of the Gospel through the Scriptures is sufficient for all understanding and faith, rendering the miraculous gift of tongues obsolete.
