How do we know that the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin?

Answered in 4 sources

We know the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin through the growing dissatisfaction with our self-righteousness and the awareness of our need for Christ.

The work of the Holy Spirit in convicting us of sin is evidenced by a palpable dissatisfaction with our self-righteous deeds and an increasing awareness of our sinful nature. As illustrated in Hosea, God's Spirit often operates quietly, like a moth or a worm, gradually eroding our false sense of security in our morality and good works. Many believers come to realize that their attempts to please God through their actions only lead to oppression and brokenness, awakening them to their true condition.

As God begins to reveal our sinfulness, we often respond by searching in the wrong places, much like Ephraim's attempts to seek healing from the Assyrian. Instead of turning to Christ, we might seek comfort in the law or in our own arguments with God. However, the Spirit's conviction does not leave us in despair but rather points us toward the compassionate nature of Christ. This dual work of conviction—revealing our sin and simultaneously leading us to the Savior—is what confirms the Holy Spirit's active role in our lives.
