How do we know that true circumcision is of the heart?

Answered in 1 source

True circumcision is a work of God's grace in the heart, not merely an external act.

Scripture clearly differentiates between outward religious rituals and the true work of God that occurs within the heart. Romans 2:28-29 explains that a true Jew is not defined by physical lineage or physical acts of circumcision, but rather by a heart that has been transformed by the Holy Spirit. This transformation leads to faith in Christ and repentance from sin. The Old Testament sign of circumcision pointed to this deeper spiritual reality that no physical act can accomplish. True circumcision involves a divine operation on one's heart, highlighting the necessity of being born again and spiritually renewed through faith in Jesus Christ. Without this heart change, any external display of religion remains void and meaningless.
