How do we know that true conversion involves more than outer reformation?

Answered in 1 source

True conversion requires a heart transformed by the Holy Spirit, not just an external change in behavior.

In the passage, Jesus illustrates the danger of mere reformation without true conversion by describing a person's heart as being empty after an unclean spirit is cast out. The spirit seeks to return and, finding the heart unoccupied, he brings even worse spirits with him. This serves as a solemn warning that a mere cessation from outward sin is insufficient for salvation. A genuine transformation happens when the Holy Spirit takes residence in the heart, and believers must move beyond mere moral reformation to a completely renewed existence in Christ. Without this heart occupation by the Holy Spirit, one risks returning to a worse state than before.
