How do we know that works do not earn salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Salvation is a gift of grace that cannot be earned by works, as we see in Ephesians 2:8-9.

In the Reformed perspective, salvation is fundamentally based on grace rather than human works. Ephesians 2:8-9 clarifies that we are saved by grace through faith, and this not of ourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. The nature of fallen humanity renders us unable to contribute to our salvation. Hence, the emphasis is placed on Christ’s completed work and His righteousness, which is imputed to believers. This understanding helps us recognize that pure religion, as taught in Scripture, involves a response to God’s grace, rather than a means to merit salvation.
