How do we know that worship in spirit and truth is essential?

Answered in 1 source

Scripture indicates that God seeks true worshipers who approach Him with sincerity and understanding (John 4:24).

The necessity of worshiping in spirit and truth stems from the nature of God, who is spirit and desires a relationship with those who approach Him rightly. As stated in John 4:24, 'God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.' This highlights that mere outward conformity to ritual or tradition is insufficient; rather, God seeks those who sincerely engage with Him from their hearts and spirits. In contrast, worship that is not rooted in truth or understanding of God's character is labeled as vain (Mark 7:6-7) and therefore unacceptable to Him.
