How do we know the atonement is necessary?

Answered in 1 source

The atonement is necessary because all have sinned and are in need of reconciliation with God.

The necessity of atonement arises from humanity's sinful nature. Romans 3:23 states that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Sin creates enmity between God and man, necessitating a means for reconciliation. The need for atonement is established by the reality that each person, by nature, is an enemy of God, primarily due to indwelling sin (Romans 5:10). Without atonement, there would be no way to bridge the chasm that sin has created, thus demonstrating the indispensable role of Christ’s sacrifice in God’s redemptive plan.
